Build a routine from what you already own
Can I build a skincare routine without buying anything new?
Step one: empty the shelf
Put everything on the table. All of it. This is uncomfortable and it is the point: you cannot sort a shelf you cannot see.
Step two: four piles
| Pile | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Clean | Gels, foams, milks, balms, cleansing oils, micellar water |
| Treat | Serums, acids, retinol, targeted creams, masks |
| Moisturize | Creams, lotions, gels, night creams |
| Protect | Sunscreens — check the date, this is where people find surprises |
Anything that fits none of these piles, such as scrubs you never liked or a gift set you have never opened, goes straight into the box.
Step three: keep one of each
One cleanser. One treatment. One moisturizer. One sunscreen. Choose by two criteria, in this order:
- Does it suit my skin type? A rich balm on oily skin will annoy you by day three.
- Do I enjoy the texture? The product you like is the product you will use tonight.
Price, brand and reviews come far behind those two.
Step four: the box
Everything not chosen goes in a box, out of sight, for one month. Not in the bin — the point is not to waste money. When your moisturizer runs out, you open the box before you open a shopping app.
Why this beats buying
A new product cannot fix a routine you do not follow. What people call "nothing works on my skin" is almost always eleven products used irregularly, not eleven bad products.
What Shadewise does with your shelf
Shadewise asks what you already own and builds your thirty days around those products, in the right order, morning and evening. The app's job is not to sell you a fifth serum — it is to tell you which four things to do tonight, and in what order.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a product has expired?
Look for the small open-jar symbol with a number and an M: 6M means six months after opening. Any product that has changed colour, texture or smell goes in the bin regardless of the date.
What if I have three moisturizers?
Keep the one whose texture suits the season and your skin type, and put the others aside. Rotating between three every few days makes it impossible to know what works.
Is it wasteful to stop using products I paid for?
Putting them in a box is not throwing them away. When your chosen moisturizer runs out, you open the box instead of the shop.
What is usually missing?
Sunscreen. It is the one product people run out of and do not replace, and it is the one that matters most.
