In what order should you apply skincare? The simple rule
In what order should you apply your skincare products?
The one rule to remember
Thinnest first, thickest last. Everything else is detail.
A serum is mostly water. A cream contains oils and waxes that form a light film on the skin. That film is there to slow water loss, and it does its job: if you put the cream on first, the serum that follows mostly stays on the surface.
Morning
| Step | What it does |
|---|---|
| 1. Cleanse | Removes the night's oil, so what follows can get in |
| 2. Serum (optional) | One targeted treatment, on slightly damp skin |
| 3. Moisturizer | Holds the water in |
| 4. Sunscreen | Always last. Nothing goes on top of it |
Evening
| Step | What it does |
|---|---|
| 1. Cleanse | A double cleanse if you wore sunscreen: oil or balm first, then your usual cleanser |
| 2. Exfoliant (1–3× a week) | On clean, dry skin |
| 3. Serum | Your treatment step |
| 4. Moisturizer or night cream | The last layer, richer than the morning one |
The part nobody tells you
Most people do not have an order problem. They have a consistency problem. A perfectly ordered routine done twice a month does nothing. Four steps done every night for a month does a lot.
If you own ten products and freeze every evening, the fix is not a better order. It is deciding, once, which four you use — and then not deciding again.
How Shadewise does it for you
You answer three questions and take one selfie in daylight. Shadewise reads your skin zone by zone, gives you an honest Glow score out of 100, and builds a thirty-day routine from the products you already own — in the right order, morning and evening, one step at a time with a timer.
No makeup, no filter, and your photo stays on your phone.
Frequently asked questions
Does the order really change anything?
For the big steps, yes. Sunscreen must come last in the morning, and a watery serum must come before a rich cream. Between two similar serums, the order matters much less than applying them at all.
How long should I wait between steps?
Long enough that the previous layer is no longer wet, usually under a minute. Waiting five minutes between steps is not necessary.
Where does exfoliation fit?
After cleansing, on clean skin, in the evening, and only one to three times a week. Not on the same night as another strong active if your skin is reactive.
What if I own ten products?
You do not have to use them all in one sitting. Pick one cleanser, one treatment, one moisturizer and one sunscreen. The rest can wait or rotate.
